The phone is clear as can be; outstanding reception. One MAJOR issue knocks it down to three stars: There is no way to tell how much charge remains on a handset. You have to wait for the phone to start beeping before scrambling to find a well-charged replacement. That sucks. Even the simplest phone should constantly display the charge meter..

This phone was purchased less than two years ago.

PROS:

1. It was very easy to start using (intuitive)

2. It's compact, almost too much so if you have large hands.I find the handset on the small side and I have small hands

3. Simple, easy to use answering machine with a counter. (I've been thinking of switching to Panasonic but so many reviews complain of this feature being missing.)

4. Inexpensive---but see CONS, item 1.

CONS:

1. My main complaint is that the batteries died--as in un-rechargeable-- at the rate of one handset every 5 months. We are relatively faithful in keeping handsets on the charger, so this was a big disappointment. You get what pay for?

2. Maybe it's me, but I could never find instructions on how to turn the ringer "OFF" without unplugging the base unit (thus disabling the entire system.) The individual handset ringers can be turned off, but the base unit rings like a home invasion alarm! (I even tried covering it with tape, but it looked silly. Our phone jack (and only location for base unit) is near our main dining area --- nightly our dinners are interrupted with calls we choose to ignore. This inability to turn the ringer off temporarily is also a liability if you're home sick and really need to get some sleep. So many reviews complain of too low volume, but this ringer wakes the dead! Ironic.

So if you are looking for an inexpensive phone with a decent array of features (including a LOUD non dis-able-able ringtone from the base unit) and you don't expect longevity in your appliances, this is your model.

V-tech are great phones. While this particular set did not work well at all, I purchased another set that are great. I would also like for you to know that there was not a problem at all in returning the phones and getting the full amount back. I absolutely love the fact that when you program one name and number into the phone, it is automatically programmed into the other three. If you have had phones that you have to program each one, you will know immediately what a blessing this is. I loved the ease of using the phone. I did not have any trouble with the reception. You can get a bad product from anyone and I do not hold this as a negative. The new V-Tech phones are almost identical to these and they work wonderfully. We have had a couple of V-tech phones over the years and I am a believer in the products.

I purchased phones in June. Worked fine for 3 months. 3 Times since September the phone stopped receiving calls. There is no indication of a problem until you try to place a call and get no dial tone. The display reads CONNECTING.

YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT AND THEN RECONNECT POWER for the phone to work. Of course that means you have to reset the clock etc.

No power or anything, even after trying a different AC adapter so either I was unlucky with my particular phone or this phone's quality is low like its price. I really liked it when it worked! The speaker phone in the base and the handset is the best quality of any phone I have ever used. I have bought so many hands-free ear pieces that sounded great for a week, but then tanked - but I will clip the beltclip of this phone on my collar as I do chores and I can have a conversation without problems with folks who say I sound loud and clear. I have an 802.11 b&g compatible wireless network at home with 3 wireless routers in various location in my home. Wireless phones below the 5.8ghz range can wreak havoc with these networks. Having the extra handset that doesn't require a phone jack is a real blessing. When I built my house, I had no idea I would one day have an indoor rabbit as a pet - and rabbits chew cords, which necessitates moving phones to other locations where I didn't think to have phone jacks installed. Since the satellite phone requires that it first sit in the original handset, you know that your neighbor isn't listening to your conversation with their own handset the way it used to work in the early 1990s. The range isn't stellar... if I get more than 50 feet away, conversations get garbled, but part of that is due to the short wavelength of these microwave phones. Concrete is also a natural filter for RF (radio frequencies), so any concrete in the line of sight between your handset and base is going to cause interference. I have had these phones for 3 years and have had to replace the battery once - and unlike all the other portable phones I have had, this is the only one where I wasn't ready to just buy a whole new phone when the battery died. I like the easy-to-understand interface that doesn't require me to consult a manual and the speakerphone is a neck saver. I simply do not hold a phone to my ear anymore - it's not good for your neck or spine to crook your head for hours at a time and I like using a phone that requires no hands. I have owned several cordless phones and so far, this is the best.

I bought this unit to replace a beautiful but dying Siemens expandable phone system. While most of the features work as advertised, my big complaint is with the handsets not answering an incoming call when you pick them up. I may be overly critical, but this is a function I generally expect from my telephones, especially ones costing this much. This inability to connect with an incoming signal has been a reoccuring problem with the first system and two replacement ones. We also get quite a bit of static that I suspect is interference with my wireless network even though the 5.8 ghz technology is suppose to avoid this problem

We also have a problem with people calling and getting a fax signal even though we don't have a fax machine. This is probably a phone company problem but at this point I'm not willing to give Uniden the benefit of the doubt.

I'll be returning this system and trying the Vtech i5871.

Overall, this is a pretty good phone and I'm going to stick with it (despite buying and dumping two or three similar phones in the past). The reception is good and the construction is solid.

The only problem after several months of use is that the battery dies suddenly without warning and I usually loose the call. It starts beeping, then a few seconds later the call is gone. I wish it gave like a one minute morning or something.

I bought this phone and 1 additional handset about 3 years ago. It worked well for about a year. First the LED screen on one phone went blank, now the LED on the second phone has also gone blank. Sound quality is generally poor. I originally purchased this because of the price - one of the least expensive multi handset cordless phones. Not worth it. I'm now looking to replace the system.

I bought this phone with one additional accompany headset to see how it works. I've had it for over 6 months now (since this review) and so far I will have to say it's a great phone. It has many features that you will be able to read about from the product details or from another review here so I won't go into that.

The phone is sleak looking with changable colored face plates. It allows up to three additional headsets (sold seperately) to "link" to the base which is great. Not only do I used it as a phone but it works as an "internal" intercom system for my home.

The sound qualty is great and it's a pretty durable phone (God knows I've dropped it enough to find out!). Being on the computer as much as I am, I'm greatful for the ability to plug a headset to it which I use when I need to carry it around the house while on the phone.

It hooks up right up with my phone companies services that I have. I'm not sure how it does it but it tells me when I have messages waiting in my "message box"... etc.

I reccomend this phone to anyone who wants a reiable and expandiable phone "system" without paying too much for it. :)

"Not happy about this phone" 2004-09-02

I bought this phone two weeks ago. Each time I tried pressing the talk button on the handset to place a call, I would get a message "Try Again" on the screen. So I am not able to use this phone. The worse is that the technical support from Northwestern is very poor. I tried to call them many times. I have not been able to get through. And they don't answer messages I left there. I tried email. I got a reply after four days. But the reply is not helpful. Anyway, I am very disappointed with the phone and their services.

I cannot hear anyone very well. It isn't extremely user friendly either. This phone is fairly worthless because I cannot use it at all because the volume is awful. What good is a 2.5 mghz phone when you can't even hear someone. The page isn't very load either. I rate my old 900 mghz phone better because at least I could hear someone talking on it.

"Nice Telephone." 2009-09-14

Great product. Brand new, never used. Sony telephones are hard to find now a days. This one is good, but it has a couple of negatives. 1. The caller ID on the base is always on (not a big deal until you turn off all the lights and are trying to sleep...then the whole room get's a HULK sort of glow going on)and 2. the battery will not hold a charge so using the hand set is a no go. It is an older telephone, so IM sure it just needs a new battery. BUT, there is a problem with that as well. You just cannot go to your local Walmart and find replacement batteries for these telephones anymore. IM sure BESTBUY or RADIOSHACK have them. Just haven't had time to look. SONY North America's web site will also be of help. All in all a great phone. Awsome seller!

This phone is a far cry from my previous Sony protable which lasted about 10 years, and unfortunately is no longer made because Sony is out of the phone making business. The handset of my new phone does not light up so I can see the caller ID screen in a dark or dimly lit room. Even in the daylight, the print is so small I almost have to squint to see who is calling. Why was this feature omitted? Why does the base unit stay lit green all the time like a nite light? It should light up only when there is a call like my old Sony. I hear faint static while I'm talking. No matter what channel I switch to while talking, I still hear the static. I plan to return this phone before the month is out for a refund.

I am a dedicated Sony consumer, so when I bought a digital cordless, naturally I bought Sony. Unfortunately, Sony has frankly **[been bad]** on one of the most important features of this phone - the battery. They obviously cut corners in this one area to add more trinkets to the phone. Which are great - caller id on the base and the handset, scrolling address book on the handset, speed dial memory, speaker phone, etc.; but, if the battery is dead after using the phone for an hour, then what use is the features! I'm not a phone junkie, in fact I hate being on the phone, but I work at home and end up on some long calls which halfway through get cut off and I have to switch to my corded phone across the house from my office. Bummer Sony! I've seen the same complaint on several other Sony cordless phones as well, so maybe I would suggest checking out another brand!

The features of this phone are great for the price. This is my 2nd sony 900 mgz phone. You guys know all the good features, let me tell you the bad, the ones that are making me return this unit. The worst thing of all, drives me crazy is when I talk on the phone, I hear my own voice sort of ringing in the speaker. Another reviewee described it as "tinny." I suppose that's a great way to describe this effect. It's so annoying that I had to unplug this phone. Also, others have griped about this also, why does the base unit's caller ID display have to be continuously illuminated? How annoying. Also, what's the point of having caller ID on the handset if it does not light up during a call? That's useless in dim rooms or at night. All in all, maybe some people can deal with these issues, but for me, I would rather spend more money and get a better phone. Like I said, this is my 2nd sony phone and my last one never had these problems.

Everything about this system is excellent.

I would also like to point out that, at least for us, the relatively large form factor has turned out to be more comfortable than smaller units that we have tried.

The speaker mode is very clear and has no feedback but, as one reviewer pointed out, better use it in a quiet room. Another minor issue. The speaker phone feature does not appear to be available if the phone is in the cradle.

I bought the previous model (TG5100M) less than a year ago hoping to buy handsets as I need them (I think I looked at "Panasonic for Life" logo for too long). However, both the base AND THE HANDSETS are discontinued now, and new models (TGA520M series) are incompatible with my base. So, while both the base and the handset are working fine, the chances for expandability are now zero... Beware!

So far, we really like the phone, although we've been noticing some dropouts. (I'm going to switch voice enhancer off and see if that helps.) It was very easy to setup, and the display and handset are backlit, so very easy to read. Comfortable to hold, and on the ear, so if the dropouts stop ... it'll be a keeper.

I was replacing an AT&T 2.4g that we really liked, so I'm hoping this will be a winner. It's great that it came with (2) handsets.

I have been looking for a decent cordless phone since my old AT&T 9400 (900 MHz digital spread spectrum) died. That phone sounded just like a corded phone, and I never counted on having problems duplicating that experience. But I did. I tried 900 MHz models, 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz of all brands, but there were always too many dead spots and drop outs.

The KX-TG5202 (essentially a KX-TG5200 with an extra handset and charger) fixes that problem. The sound quality is as good as I've heard from any current models, and it even sports a "voice enhancement" technology which, if switched on, makes voices sounds more "realistic." In addition, each handset has a speakerphone, which gets high marks from the people I've called on the phone.

The phone has a black and white display for Caller ID information, and three "soft buttons" which change function depending on the mode the phone is in. It has all basic functionality you'd expect from a $100+ phone (backlighting, phone books, various ring tones, etc.) It doesn't go overboard, however. There is no voice dialing or voice announcement of callers, for example.

All in all, this is a good, solid phone with basic functionality and more than respectable sound quality. If you're not looking for a lot of bells and whistles, you'll love it.

This phone had great reception and I was very pleased with the features. We have voice mail and the button on top of the phone will flash if you have a new message. It was an easy, quick way to know when you had a message waiting. The caller ID feature works fine. The problem for us is that several weeks after having this phone, it suddenly won't work. It doesn't appear to be the battery and the user's guide offers no insight. I have not looked into the problem enough to know where the blame lies. I like this phone enough to try it again.

This phone is worthless. The phone does not have a back light, so you cannot read the incoming phone number, or dial in the dark. The clock is on an angle that you have to stand over it to see the time. Frequently I cannot answer a call, or dial a number, as the "Talk" button does not work to answer the call and or open the line to call a phone number. Don't buy it. Unfortuantely my 30 day return limit is past, so I am just out of the money and will now have to go buy a new phone!!!

"Excellent speakerphone, puzzling design" 2002-07-24

Among the handset speakerphones available, this has the best sound quality and range I've come across. I get a loud clicking sound from my wifi system, but it doesn't seem to bother the person on the other end.

The 4200/4215 setup is very handy to use. A much cleaner look than my old setup with a GE wireless phone jack and Panasonic cordless phone. Now I'm down to just one AC plug and a very sleek looking base for the 4200, which matches my off white walls perfectly. The 4200 can be wall mounted in the vertical position, which looks sharp and is very handy for accessing the speakerphone and remote answering machine functions. Why Siemens did not allow the 4215 base unit to be wall mounted, I just can't figure out. At least I can wall mount the 4200 in the kitchen and listen to messages remotely.

The biggest drawback to this phone is the nonsensical cell-phone-like interface. It doesn't bother me much, but a potential buyer should check it out. For example, to raise the volume on the earpiece, you have to take the phone away from your ear, scroll through the menu, adjust the volume, then cancel out of the menu screens. I just keep it on "high" at all times, but all users might not like doing this. Another example is the 2 second delay between pressing a number button and hearing a tone. This is very confusing, as the sound delay causes me to misdial, and I don't know whether I have misdialed a number until I see the number on the LCD screen.

Overall though, it does a good job at what was most important to me: using the handset speakerphone and having a phone where I had no phone jack.

Great phone. The speaker phone works great! People do not know I have them on speaker phone, unless I am typing at my keyboard. Programable names/numbers works great. I find the answering machine quality to be just fine. Range is good. I have roamed a ways from the house. I like the time and date right there on the phone. I always carry it around the house. The batteries that come with are no good, but if you buy some NM-Hi rechargables, they seem to last for days. Love this phone, I just need one more for the bedroom. The voice announce of the incoming caller is excellent.

I would give 5 stars, but the response time when you push the keys is anoying sometimes.

And that would be for USPS Priority Mail + handling fee.

Go through reviews and you'll see one word comes again and again "CLICK". This phone "CLICK"s very loud and annoying all through conversation. I subconciosly refrain from using this phone in a house just becouse of that. Make sure that if you buy it you have an option to return it back becouse most likely you'd need it.

Also as it was noted in other posts. Battery life if 1-2 days at most. I have my old AT&T cordless phone having 6-7 days.

So basically I don't see why anybody will consider this phone in a first place.

This is certainly the best cordless phone I ever used. The basic functions are very simple to understand (I almost never had to use the manual yet). The battery works excellent, we had no problems with it at all. The answering machine is great. Superior sound quality. No problems with interference in NYC. Extremely reliable phone. There is one little drawback: If you have misplaced the phone and want to use the alarm function you have to look for the button on the bottom of the base station.

Tech support and customer support all but non-existant.
Would throw it in trash except for my >$200 investment in a pair.

We have two of these phones -- bought them at Best Buy last year. I thought that these phones looked good and felt nice in the hand. THESE PHONES WILL DRIVE YOU CRAZY. (1) The phones constantly "beep" on and off for no apparent reason. (2) The battery life is terrible. I could go on and on in detail but I will leave it nice and short. I recommend that you look elsewhere.

I was quite excited to finally see this phone on sale, so I bought it. I should have read the reviews first. The sound quality is horrible. It constantly clicks like someone is picking up another phone in the house. After 6 months, a majority of the buttons dont work. I have to push on them numerous times. The only good thing I can say is that the phone looks good and is comfortable in my hand.

"Sticky buttons and Out of Range errors" 2006-02-24

I have had this phone about a year and I have already experienced several "out of range" errors on the handset while I am within two feet of the base unit. This is really frustrating along with the extreme amount of pressure it takes to push the buttons, which sometimes results in double digits getting pushed by accident. Also, wish there was a redial button and everyone who uses it pushes the intercom button to end the call which makes a loud beeping noise. So obviously pushing the talk button to hang up the phone is not the normal procedure nor is it very popular with my friends who can not seem to get the hang of it, pardon the pun.

I will give the phone a thumbs up for clarity and distance as well as battery talk time. But overall I am disappointed in this Panasonic product. Wait, come to think of it I never liked Panasonic stereo equipment either. Hmmm, I wonder if Pioneer makes telephones.

I'll get straight to the point here:

1. No problems working the phone; keys intutitive, slight learning curve

2. It does have its quirks like keys that slip...just use it a while dialing and the "slick" gives way to a sure touch

3. Unrivaled ruggedness...it was dropped off a two story balcony onto grass. The person was still on the line.

4. Great range (see point number 3)

5. Battery good, not great, but acceptable.

6. Long life (had it working for 5 years with NO problems)

Now the bad part and it's only one thing, but a fatal one.

After 5 years of no problems, I finally got the infamous "out of range" error. After looking high and low for a solution, most everyone out there that experienced this problem had their phones replaced or they trashed them.

I had to trash mine. When speaking to Panasonic reps, they were quite surprised, at least it seemed to me, that the phone had lasted this long. But it was WAY beyond warranty and nothing could be done.

I ultimately tried shorting it out...sort of a hard reset, but to no avail.

Overall, I loved this phone. It was wonderful. But of course I can't give it anything higher than 3 stars because ultimately it broke when I didn't want it to. But I'm glad I got 5 years out of it. What more, really, could anyone ask for given our current state of disposable electronics?

"Poorly Designed -- Stay Away" 2004-12-05

Here is why I rate this phone so poorly:

1. Hard to use number pad. The "press" action requires significant pressure and the surface is slippery as well. So, I often end up dialing the same digit twice. I call many different international numbers and it is so frustrating to redial 15 digits again. :(

2. The User Interface of the entire software (Redial, Memory, Directory, etc.) is very poorly designed. It does not even have a "redial" button.

3. I often hear crackle in the signal. (Although this could be me wireless router interfering with the signal).

I was very happy with my previous Panansonic phones. But never again I am buying one without actually getting a hands-on experience with the phone. This seems to be a growing trend with electronics these days - prices are falling and quality is getting worse. I would advise you to stay away from this model.

Would be a great phone (4 Stars) except for a FATAL FLAW. Does Panasonic get kickbacks from battery manufacturers?

***OH*** Panasonic makes ITS OWN batteries.

BEWARE the manual's advice that this phone "may be always kept on the charging base." Its batteries are NICADs! NiCads have memories!!! So be sure to leave the phone off the charger until it requires recharging. Otherwise your battery will last only a month or two (I am totally serious---happened to me).

If you're lucky and the battery dies at the 29-day stage, AND you have every single plastic bag, twist-tie, styrofoam piece, receipt etc., take the ENTIRE unit back to the store and they have to exchange it. The store won't just give you a new battery. After 30 days, a replacement battery will cost you $20 & up. "Ching"

PS I called Panasonic and guess what? Everybody complains about this. And I thought America wasn't full of geeks. Good work everyone, now--if we can just get the MFR to improve their product.

***Great feature---handset has own speakerphone, stands up nicely on flat hard surface as long as you don't touch it;
***Poor feature ---like most phones these days does not fit comfortably against my ear & lacks any but minimal curve, which mars hand-holding in my opinion.

Caller-ID*****Is some proprietary version you have to pay additional for.

Placement****One version hangs on the wall; its handset can be placed facing either in OR out and still charge, i.e. foolproof.

Flash********This feature won't disconnect the line, making multiple redialing (to win those tickets or speak with Rush Limbaugh) more not less difficult.

Maybe that's GOOD!

Redial*******This feature only works after 'Off' but does call up a list of numbers.

Do not, under any circumstances, buy this phone. When I first got it, it seemed to work perfectly. The CallerID, phonebook, you name it had me wowed. One week after the manufacturer's warranty expired, it started giving me "Out of Range" messages whenever I attempted to access the Caller ID list. Oddly enough, I could still make phone calls. Fiddling with the menus didn't help. Reading the manual didn't help. Customer support was a joke. I will never by another Panasonic piece of equipment again for as long as I live.

Well, not exactly - the base does need to plug into the wall, but what a handy extra phone. I have the base phone and I love it, and this makes a nice addition to the home network. I have this extra one plugged into the wall of a room that does not have a phone jack, but it doesn't need one, since it communicates w/ the base on the other side of the house.

I bought my base phone about a year ago, but just got the additional handset 2 weeks ago. All I had to do was to put it in the base cradle for 3 seconds and it automatically was programmed for use.

The built-in speaker phone is not the best in the world, but still pretty awesome, all things considered. The jack for the hands-free mike is awesome, and in my opinion, absolutely necessary. I won't buy a handset that doens't have a hands-free option anymore... and it's a normal jack, not some funky jack that needs an expensive adapter.

The caller ID holds 99 numbers and you can easily begin and end calls and use all the features without a manual or a degree in rocketry science.

I purchased this phone but returned it. My initial reaction was to the sound quality. When comparing this item to my Panasonic 2 line 900 mhz spread spectrum phone, I noticed that the sound quality was noticeably worse.

My second reaction was to the inability to use both handsets simultaneously. I feel that if a cordless system has two handsets, they should both be able to talk on one line at the same time. Plus, there is no feature to transfer the address book from one phone to another.

Overall, this phone is very slick looking, and might work for someone who is satisfied with only 10 minutes of answering machine recording time and doesn't mind mediocre sound quality. I find that the older 900 mhz DSS panasonic phones offer much higher sound quality and extended range in comparison to this phone.

I have owned this phone for a few years and have experienced no problems with it (I have talked 4+ hours on this phone w/o any battery problems). My only qualm is, I wish I could purchase an additional handset exclusive of the phone because my toddler 'put away the phone' and we have yet to locate it---I would definately purchase this model again.

After dealing with panasonic for over a year regarding the short battery life (1 hour at most) I have finally gotten somewhere thanks to Jon's review. I wrote to panasonic after my friend returned her phone to them and it was repaired. I asked them if knew they about the problem with this phone, why weren't they letting people know? They refused to provide any help and said if I was still in warrantly I could return it. Otherwise, I was out of luck. Panasonic was certainly aware of the problem with this phone, but clearly refused to publicly accept responsiblity or issue a recall. Thankfully, with a post it note, I have been able to solve the battery problem that has been plaguing me since I purchased this phone. If you own this phone, try Jon's suggestion it works!

Problems I have had with this phone:

Display on the phone randomly stops working and I either have to take out and replace the battery (which then results in a drained charge) or keep replacing on the charger until it come back. Either way it's a huge inconvenience.

Reception is unpredictable at best. Sometimes it comes in great and sometimes it comes in lousy... kind of something I would expect in a cordless, although with a 2.4ghz I expected better... but really it doesn't seem like the cordless technology has made any leaps and bounds in the last 10+ years.

If I place it on the table in speaker mode and don't place extremely gentle the phone shuts off.

Features are ok.... it's kind of a pain to delete calls in the caller ID.

Not the best phone I coudl have spent the money on. Now that I have had it a while I wish I had done a little more research, since this was an impulse buy.

This phone has some greate features. The only problem is that you cannot make use of them if the phone does not work. This phone will not hold charge. I leave it in the charger all night, make one 15 minute call and then it either just dies or the battery shows that there is no charge left, and this is with a new battery. The other thing that I noticed while troubleshoting is that if you remove a fully charged battery, and then place it back in to the phone... it shows as almost completely empty.... like I said it would be a great phone, but there is something very wrong with this design.

There's a reason it's this cheap. It's just not a great phone. Not a lot of thought went into its design. For example, it has caller ID and you can scroll through the numbers. But you can't actually call them. Because the phone doesn't realize that most people have to use a 1 when dialing any area code now. Even my previous phone did that.

We've had problems with other cordless phones, but so far this one has none of them. Interference from the microwave, disconnecting and losing their charge if you set them down at all ungently, random static issues (probably from EMI or RFI). That's how our old phone was. This one works great. The only thing that's at all annoying is that everytime I pick up the handset, I hit the volume button - it's just in the wrong place, but that's not a big deal as it's simple to adjust.

I really like this phone and I've been pretty hard to please when it comes to other cordless models. I'd all but given up on anything cordless thinking my house was just incompatible with the current technology. This system changed my mind. I have to agree with the previous review about the battery issue, however. Mine lasted about 18 months and then I had to search for replacements. It was a pain in the neck, but I like the phone and really wanted to keep it. Finally I found a number of battery suppliers on EBAY selling replacements for under six dollars. I've bookmarked those sellers and I'm happily keeping this phone.

"Good Solid Cordless Phone" 2004-12-22

I was very surprised to see ony two stars for this phone. I have had one for over two years and this phone has been a good solid performer. I am a self-proclaimed gadget freak and have tried many different cordless phone brands. I think that Panasonic and Sony make the best phone and I think that Panasonic, while the cheaper of the two generally makes better equipment. With two small kids ours has been dropped and moved multiple times and has never given us trouble. It has provided better clarity than my more expensive Sony phones as well. I will admit that the features that are jammed into this phone are a bit over the top but this is a very useful phone. In fact, I'm on the site to purchase one for my mom. Happy Holiday!

"Replace the Panasonic Battery with a non-Panasonic battery" 2004-03-03

In my earlier review, I spoke of having the now infamous Panasonic battery problem. Since then I took the advice offered by one of the other reviewers of this product. They replaced their poor Panasonic battery with a non-Panasonic battery and have seemingly fixed their problems.

So I headed to the nearest Radio Shack to buy one of their Radio Shack brand phone batteries and thus far it's working great. The battery I purchased was catalog number 23-270 ($14 and change after tax) and it's a Radio Shack 3.6V/1200mAh NiMH Battery. The battery itself is a little smaller than the Panasonic battery, but still works like a charm.

So if you're having a problem with the battery, replace it with a non-Panasonic battery and you should be fine. I thank the previous poster who offered up the idea originally. For whatever reason, I never thought to try an off-brand battery. I hope this helps those who ran into this problem like myself.

I have owned this phone for over a year, and after replacing the original NiCd Panasonic battery with a GE 1300 mAh NiMH battery (TL965600187), the battery performance has been exceptional. The features of this phone are excellent and the performance has been great. However, recently we have been unable to use it at all due to large amounts of 2.4GHz interference in our home. Beware of too many wireless devices in your area. The 2.4GHz spectrum is the wild west. Other than that, this phone is great!!

I have to agree with everyone else on the reception...i constantly have clicking sounds and 'white noise.' If an appliance is on (such as the microwave), the noise is unbearable. Also, I usually have to pick up the other handset after 30-40mins of a conversation because the low battery signal will start beeping in. Very, very annoying. My husband and I have had this phone for 2 years and if we didn't have cell phones we probably would have thrown this phone out the window a long time ago. This is the worst phone I have every owned.

I just got this after having a HORRIBLE system from Bell Phones. For the money, it's not bad. In response to some other reviewers, no, it doesn't automaticaly add a "1" before a long distance number if you're returning a number from the caller id. However, all you have to do is press the "format" button while viewing the number, and the "1" is added. This is good for someone like me, who lives in an area where I always have to dial the area code when calling anyone (even within my own area code) I only have to dial a "1" when someone is far away (and they might still be in my area code. It's very confusing)

As far as the echo and the static goes, I haven't had a problem with that. Hopefully I won't. I agree with the other people about the caller id list, though. It's very confusing, it's not in order of calls. Also, there is no voice mail waiting notification. But other than that, it's not bad.

I got this phone after my other GE phone's keys just stopped working. You had to press the button and hold it down for at least 10 seconds before the number would come up. But so far this phone after about 6 or 7 months, has been really great. I have only one complaint. The keypad doesnt light up at night, so it's sometimes hard to see.

I ordered two. I don't get why this series of phones gets marginal reviews. We have the all of the phones in our home switched over to these Uniden 2.4mhz models because of reliability, sound quality and price. At this price, when the batteries die and the buttons start to stick in several years (which almost all eventually do), toss them out. We have bought plenty of bad phones in the past, but with this line we have had no static or premature phone death. The search feature button on the base is nice when it gets buried in the couch. I strongly recommend them. Only reason I didn't give it a 5/5 is it wasn't free...

I've had this phone for a few years and haven't had the problems that these other people experienced. In fact I am just replacing the battery for the first time. The range is pretty good.

One thing that is really annoying is that most of the numbers rubbed off the buttons some time ago, so that I have to be very careful when I dial. If the number uses letters instead of numbers, forget it! And I can't see the letters on the buttons to import anything into memory either, very easily.

With my headset the volume so low I can hardly hear people much of the time although it's better when I don't use the headset. (It's a cheap headset) The voice quality is not very good, though either way.

I wish the two lines had more different rings so I knew which one is ringing without looking. They sound almost identical.

I am replacing this with a Panasonic 2 line phone. I've have a Panasonic 1 line phone longer than this one that I have been very happy with.

Uniden brand name and the reviews on TRU3466 with speakerphone, gave them another chance. # sign on handset died after a few months (try using voicemail systems without the pound #)had to use speakerphone constantly for # sign key. Earpiece is necessity, move around my office a lot, works on and off now, lot of static or no reception at all. I also need earpiece to keep hands free (major reason for speaker phone as well).Bought two phones, less than two years, $180. Big disappointment.
Will never buy UNIDEN phone again.

I bought this phone because of the range and speaker phone feature. I immediately found that the phone kept displaying "line 2" active when there was only one line to the phone. The battery in the handset died after only two months and a replacement never charged. When I returned it to the manufacturer via instructions I received a factory-reconditioned older phone with only 900 mhz in return with no other explanation. I will never buy a UNIDEN phone again.

"Horrible phone" 2002-04-23

I have this phone and have purchased about 8 of the corded version (IBM 412CID) over time as one by one they have failed. Here are the problems:

(1) After about a year, buttons -- like "hold", "line 1", etc. --start to go dead on the phone.

(2) There is something strange about the electronics because occasionally, for no apparent reason, the telephone will pick up on speakerphone, so that you find a dialtone blaring into an empty room.

(3) Sometimes the cordless version will insist it has a low battery even though the battery is fully charged. There is an arcane procedure in the manual to fix this. (This may account for the other reviewers' comment about dead batteries.)

(4) Generally, it is very hard to use and program. You have to punch in an amazing number of codes to do simple things like changing the ringer.

(5) The phone is stupid about basic things link disconnecting if you hang up -- you have to push "End" or it stays connected even on the cradle, and if you put someone on hold and pick up in another room, the original phone will keep ringing to remind you that someone was once on hold.

I've read all five reviews. I've been looking for a well designed, affordable and reliable 4 line phone for over a year! I think I'm going to pass on the IBM 900 MHz Cordless, not only because of the problems identified but also because I, like some other reviewers, already have one four line phone (purchased as a make do strategy until I could find a phone more to my liking). I'm struck by the lack of variety and the extremely small number of manufacturers that offer 4 line cordless phones. I also find it amazing that features I've come to take for granted on l and 2 line phones (lighted displays, blinking lines, etc., seem to be lacking on the few 4 line cordless I've reviewed. If anyone knows of other brands, please let us know.

I ordered one through Amazon.com, but when I received it I couldn't charge the battery (left it there for 15 hours). Then I returned it and asked for another one. Amazon.com was nice enough to send me another one 2nd day delivery at no charge, but UPS was not good enough and delivered the item to me after 7 working days!!! The new one has exactly the same problem. The handset is DEAD. The battery is not charging at all and it seems this IBM-4900 caused me enough problems to the point where I think I will return this one; go to an electronic shop and will pay double but I WONN'T BUY IBM again!!!

I just discovered a big problem for me, after having the phone company come and install more jacks for this phone. I had two 4 line IBM-412CD phones, and encountered the same problem as the last reviewer... if you picked up on a line, using another make of phone, your main/base phone would keep reminding you that it was on hold, even if the call had gone away from the other phone. Now that I have the cordless IBM, I can't tell what line is ringing... there are no indicator lights on the handset to tell me. I answer some lines one way (business) and others just "hello" (home line) and now I don't know how to answer the phone when the handset rings and I'm not near the base phone to see. Really irritating, and I'm stuck, since these phones are not compatible with other makes. Thanks, IBM. (not)

I purchased this phone to use it with a headset. But when I walk around the house, the party I'm talking to always hears some sort of noise due to the phone or headset chord rubbing agains this or that. Maybe I had a bum headset or phone. But the clincher for me was this phone is not compatible with other mfgrs. I have some phones mfgrd by VTech & daily heard random ringings & beeps from the IBM phone. I called the mfgr (TT Systems or something like that is the mfgr, IBM is just the name on the phone), TT said this 4-line phone can not be mixed and matched with other mfgrs. Well, I don't want to toss out my existing V-Tech phones. So I'm getting (2) additional V-Tech phones for my home office. My situation is I have 2 lines for work & 2 lines for home; and want all 4 lines in my office. By the way if you want a chordless phone with headset I definitely recommend looking at V-Tech, we've had 2 of their phones and their the best chordless I've found. Other than that the IBM is loaded with features (4 line, speakerphone, DND, Caller ID, Mute, Redial, Transfer, Paging, Conference, Intercom, mute) that V Tech didn't offer. If you are in a position to use one mfgr for all your phones; and if the chordless headset problems are just a fluke; or you don't want a headset; I would recommend considering the IBM. Also for Telecom novices like me, if you call the phone company to do the wiring, there are 3 jacks in this phone, L1/L2, L3/L4, and Data. So in my home office the phone company set up 2 wall jacks, L1/L2, and L3/L4...I think the wall jacks called RJ14 wall jacks instead of the standard RJ11.

I've owned a 900MHz Uniden Extend-A-Phone for over 10 years and I've been happy with it - the only exception there is that the range is pretty limited. With the good experience with the Uniden product and wanting to get something more up to date, I selected the Uniden 5.8 GHz model that included call ID features. Getting the unit up and working was simple enough - as any phone should be. Programming the call entries wasn't too bad but I don't like the method for activating the calls from the list. It makes 3 way calling much more difficult when using entries from the address book. But one of the most annoying things about this phone is that I have to set the time of day and day of week. I don't know why this information isn't simply taken from the caller ID message. It wouldn't be so bad to set it once, but this phone has the nasty habit of resetting when I plug it in the charger after a call. The call could be 2 minutes or 92 minutes and it may or may not reset when placed in the charger. 2 stars because it does have good range, but I would expect that in any 5.8 phone. Bottom line for me is that this will be the last Uniden product I ever purchase.

I replaced my old phone by the same manufacturer with this one. This has more feature and even a room monitor if you have the base unit. The only thing I don't like is that there is no channel search feature. I live in an area where a lot of interference can occur. I sometime have to hang up on a call and call beck to resolve the issue. Over all it is a good phone with mute, redial, programmable ring tones and even gives the date and time and automatically updates for Daylight Savings Time. I don't like how you try to call a number back in a different area code but the phone will not allow you to insert a 1 and then dial. You have to write the number down and manually enter 1 and the area code and number for calls our of your area code. Overall it is a nice phone.

The answering machine is one of the best I have owned. It is costly but worth it. Additional expansions up to eight can be added. The intercom I use the most!! I have three of these in my house - all bought in September of 2006. One of these was replaced within the first year and the replacement doesn't work at all now. I swapped out batteries from a phone that does work so I know that it is not a problem with the batteries. Another phone now has so much static when in use that it is untolerable to listen or talk using that phone. The third phone works great for a minute or two and then it just goes dead. Initially I was very positive about these phones, but now I have nothing but a bunch of crappy phones that cost me several hundred of dollars. It's ironic that they all seemed to have problems shortly after the one-year manufacturer's warranty expired. If you risk buying any of these handsets, the extended warranty might actually make sense since the product has such poor quality.

At $149.00 retail the phone worked well in the beginning but as time goes on the features and buttons begin to not work. I can't use the directory or caller ID's functions. The scroll up/down keys do not work. I bought another handset at $60.00, this gave me one working phone. It's a wasted investment of $209 because the handset does not work without the main phone being connected. By the time it stops working the waranty is out of date. When you pay for shipping and repairs you can buy another phone. It's definitey not a good investment.

I have owned this phone system for 2 years, and I'm currently shopping for another to replace it. For the money, it should've lasted me much longer. The problem is with the buttons. As others mentioned, we bought this phone for the price. I would disagree with one previous note, the sound quality was always very clear. But, 2 years later, we are buying a new phone because the buttons stick on this one. After about 18 months of moderate use, the buttons started responding sporadically. Sometimes they work fine, other times they would not even respond to being pressed, and then other times, they would double dial when you press them once. I would not recommend this phone to anyone who wants something that won't be in the landfill 2 years later.

The GE 27928GE5 2.4 GHz analog phone is, without a doubt, the best of the simple, basic cordless telephones. Like any electronic device, individual problems can arise, and I suspect that others who have written somewhat negative reviews were probably the victims of those ooccasional problem products. I have a half dozen of the GE 27928GE5 phones scattered around the house and they all have performed flawlessly, that's why I standardized on this particular model. They are getting harder and harder to come by these days, but if one searches enough, there are still a few dealers that carry this particular model telephone. I hope that Amazon continues to stock them because they seem to have the better price. The GE 27928GE5 phone is a basic, 10-memory phone with redial, ringer on-off, flash function and a volume control. That's all that I wanted in a telephone. The best thing about the 27928GE5 is that it sounds like a corded phone, not like a typical cordless, and being analog, it's audio is clean and without the normal digitizing distortions and "odd sound" of so many of the digital audio telephones out there today. Clean sound, simple operation, basic features and an attractive price in an attractive looking package was what I was hoping for in a cordless phone and the 27928GE5 provides just that. Let's keep our fingers crossed that GE continues to make them.

I bought this phone because I just needed a phone for my room, without the "bells and whistles" of an answering machine system. The worked really well for maybe two or three months (good reception, light, etc...), but now I can't talk on my phone for more than 5 minutes (after being charged for 24 hours b/t each call) before the battery dies on me. Kind of ridiculous, really. Also, my phone "clicks" when I am actually able to use it. It might be worth it for a month or so, unless you like to buy a new phone 4 times a year. :-)

I buy this phone when we were moving to a new house, so I can use extra handset upstaires. I did not try it untill after a month, when I moved to new place I tried it. But the second handset doesn't work. It rings but when you pick-up the phone you will just here horrible loud sounds. I contect the staples, but it was more then a month they said they can't do anything about that. So I contected uniden's customer service. They had a horrible customer survice. When I buy this phone I think this was a good deal, but now I tossed it just in my basement. And may be next time when I clean my basement it's going to be in trash. his phone eeven doesn't deserve 1 star,but I can't give it less then one star. If you are planning to buy phone, just spend little more money and go for panasonic. I am using one for 4 years now, and I buy another one with extra handsets from panasonic, and it's working great.

First set was defective, actually just the one handset. Was quickly replaced and the new one works fine. The great thing about this phone is the capability of transferring the phone book (which can easily be added to by the caller id list) to each handset with just a few buttons. Sound quality is ok, not fantastic but good. The other cool feature is that you can assign ring tones to individual numbers. Otherwise, the phone is pretty simplistic and works as expected.

This has to be the worst phone ever made. After using it for about several months, it stopped working with the word "Searching" now constantly showing on the display. What it may be searching for, one may never know. Thinking that maybe the battery was bad, I bought a new battery. This made absolutely no difference. Occassionally it will "find" itself, but will invariably drop the signal midway thru a converssation, or have such very poor reception you can't hear the person on the other end - or they can't hear you and hang up. DO NOT BUY this phone - unless you like wasting your money.

It has several serious flaws that make the phone pretty useless. 1) Battery lasts for about 20 mins talk time. 2) loss of signal (SEARCHING...) even thought the phone is less than 10 feet from the base. 3) Really annoyingly loud ringer, and YOU CAN NOT CHANGE THE RINGER or the volume! I presently own a 900DSS and a 2.4DSS which allow me to walk to my mailbox and around the garden (several hundred yards). I figured the 5.8DSS would give me even more range. Not so! I can go about 80ft, from my workshop to my back door, before losing the signal. I located and returned the unit to the manufacturer and received a replacement - which performed no better. It's an attractive phone, has good features and clarity - but not range, which is important to me.

This phone has a much better range than my crappy old 900MHz phone, and I can walk all through the house, and around it and still get good reception.

However, the sound quality is poor, with lots of quiet but disturbing background static. I have also experienced this in the only other "digital" phone I've owned, so I suspect a problem in the conversion from analog to digital and back.

I also noticed some of the fade-in/fade-out effect while listening to some nice hold music, and some pops and clicks.

The phone has a headset jack, but my standard 2.5mm headset doesn't work with it. My headset works with my two other cordless phones, so either there's a problem with this particular phone, or it takes a special proprietary plug.

The keypad failed me in six months... no matter now hard I pressed, the buttons, beginning with the most used buttons, failed to respond. The failure was complete past the year warrantee, and still they replaced the handset for me. Very gracious, but guess what? The replacement handset did the same thing, leaving me with no warantee protection and a phone that doesn't work.

Motorola phone support was non-existent, and email support told me to clean it. What? A phone that needs to be taken apart and cleaned after six months?

Unacceptable. Buy another brand.

I am highly disappointed in Motorola's quality of the MD491. I have repaired the unit eight times and replaced the batteries but have finally given up. I have ordered a Panasonic replacement phone system. The key pads stick as others have described and the battery gives a two bar indication then dies shortly after you start talking. I see on Amazon complaints of other Motorola cordless units having the same problem. It is a shame because Motorola produced quality products in the past.

I have four Motorola MD41 handsets in my house. They are all about two years old. The keypads do not work on all four of them. There is a design flaw. There are three leaky electrolytic capacitors soldered to one side of the printed circuit board, and the keypad contacts are on the other side of the same circuit board. The electrolyte eventually leaks out (this happens sooner in warm temperature and later in cold temperature, e.g., sooner in the second-floor bedroom and later in the basement of my house) and shorts the keypad contacts, after which some keys stop working. Since I have a Ph.D. in electronic engineering, I was able to take the thing apart and wipe off the spilled electrolyte using a cotton cloth soaked with anhydrous ethanol. After this time-consuming procedure the keypad works for a couple of months, but then electrolyte comes back and some keys stop working again. Imagine a phone which dials only those numbers that do not contain digits 1, 2, 3 and 5. How can one use it? Bottomline: do not buy this product because it is not reliable.

Called Motorola's service hotline after I saw others having the same issues with the handsets that stop working. I was told that there's a 1 year manufacturer's warranty and that if I give them all my serial numbers, they can verify the dates for me. I have the receipt and I know when I bought them....well over a year ago. I have the MD 481 base unit that came with an extra handset and purchased 2 md 41 handsets. 2 of the 4 phones' keypads have stopped working correctly.

Didn't have the luck of the other reviewer who is getting new handsets...and that's after I rattled off all of the different Motorola products I currently own.

Nice phones...when they work.

Well, from the beginning these phones have had little nuances that have turned into larger ones. Motorola replaced the batteries under warranty back when they first started acting up, stating the batteries were the problem. Put the new batteries in and it helped for a short time.

Recently, you have to hit some of the buttons multiple times to make them work and the caller ID screen quit working. I called motorola, and that stated because the phones were out of warranty there was nothing they could do. They told me to clean the key pad, and/or buy new batteries to fix the problem...which is not the problem.

Oh well, some companies still stand behind their products, motorola apparently isn't one of them.

I've been through so many different phones the past few years, and all have ended up malfunctioning in one way or the other. I just wish someone would make a quality product.

This is a decent phone, I think. The support for 2 lines is great, except on the phone itself you can't change the ringer volume per line... I wanted it to ring on line 1 and not on line 2, but you can only specify that on the base itself.

Also the interface is quite confusing.

The absolute worst thing about this phone is that it interferes with my 802.11 wireless! When the phone is ringing or in use, the computer's on the wireless LAN get entirely disconnected, and cannot reconnect until the phone is no longer communicating. So only buy this phone if you don't use WLAN and don't intend to in the near future.

The battery life is just bad. The phone goes dead after about 20 minutes. I advise you not to make an important call on this phone. You have to store phone numbers twice. I bought this product on the strength of good reviews from Consumer Reports. It had poor reception right out of the box (our other cordless phones are crisp and clear at the same jack). It alternated between sounding like a cell phone with a weak signal and sounding like I was having a phone conversation in an echo chamber. Within weeks the battery would not hold a charge through a single 5 minute call. Took the phone back to Best Buy, which declined to exchange or refund because an extended warranty was not purchased. We left it in a heap on the counter at Best Buy and said good riddance (to the phone and Best Buy).

I own the Panasonic KX-TG2267 and the
Panasonic KX-TG2593B 2.4 GHz DSS 2-Line Cordless Telephone.

I purchased the KX-TG2267 because I did not need another answering a machine, wanted the speaker phone feature on the handset and wanted the lower price.

Both phones are two line phones and both handset have acceptable volume and features like call ID, the problem is that the quality of the recption on wirless hand set of the KX-TG2267 is poor. It also has very little range.

The KX-TG2593B is a much better cordless phone, I think it is because of the DSS feature. Buy this phone!

I had to make a switch from my beloved (and old) 900Mhz Uniden EXAI7980 (read my review) after it "expired" on me. Being used to a particular phone for years, I decided to purchase a system with similar features in the 2.4Ghz range. I found that this model from Panasonic has got the most complete set of options for basic cordless answering systems. By the way, Amazon's description of this system may be misleading; it is actually a cordless "answering system" and not simply a cordless "telephone".

I'm a practical user, I really don't have the need for setting caller IQ or maybe even enter or donwload 40 or 50 phone numbers into the system. What I really wanted was ease of use, a quick setup, reliability and a good manual in case I get stuck.

A quick-installation manual was included, no need to open the big, detailed instruction booklet to simply hook up and get the phone to work, that's one big plus. With this quick 6-page guide I was able to set up and understand the most basic features most people will ever require: Recording the greeting message (I love that part!), setting up the day and time, listening to messages locally and remotely, using the handset, where the buttons are and what they do.

The detailed instruction manual explains every feature in detail. You'll see a diagram of every button on your phone and what page in the manual explains their use.

I have no problems with battery life, either I am a lucky person or I simply followed the instructions to charge the handset for at least 15 hours before even lifting it up. No problems with reception either, I followed the clear instructions on the guide to locate the phone away from electronic equipments such as TVs, PCs and microwaves and to place the phone base as high as possible in a central location.

One additional plus about this phone is the presence of dial buttons on the base unit. Sometimes this important feature is overlooked. In case the handset's batteries run out, you can still dial numbers using the base and talk using the speaker phone.

Overall, this is a good product.

Like many of the reviews already here- I have had the poor battery problems. The talk-time has steadily decayed, and even when the phone was brand-new it never held-up to the claimed 5hrs in the manual.

Another annoyance is the fact that the handset and base phone memory need to be programmed seperately. i.e. each number you want to store has to be entered twice!

The speaker phone seems to be poor too- the other-end almost always has problems hearing you.

I was hoping this phone would be better than my 2.4GHZ Uniden.

The 2.4 has a range of about 125ft. I can keep the non-base headset in the shop at 100 ft and it works fine.

The 5588 starts hissing and popping at the back door -- one floor under the headset. I can't make it 1/3 the distance of the older model. BY the time I get to the shop the phone quits.

So instead of ditching my old 2.4, I've maxed out the recharge ability of both 2.4s. This is really irritating since the 2.4 kills my Wi-Fi connection and the 5.8 does not.

Time to buy another phone set and since I can't count on Uniden, it will be a Panasonic. Both Unidens go into the garabge (after recycling the batteries).

The telephones are light and handy, but the range is not very far. My office is on one side of the house, and when I try to use my phone on the other side you loose a clear signal. The phones do not have an antenna sticking out of the phones (my old wireless phones did and they had great reception -- just couldn't get the handsets anymore they were so old).

We have these land lines in several rooms and they have worked just fine over the last three or four years. I like the fact that you can add phones to the system. We had some other larger Uniden phones that work as the "main" phones and the compatibility is perfect. They even work pretty good away from the base set when you are outside in the backyard. The features like caller ID etc. is a bonus. I must admit the phone book feature has never been used but we could if needed. If I had one complaint it might be the size is too small. I think they wanted to have the cell phone size but it is not the same. For man size hands the keypad is a little small but you get used to it by using corners of your thumb. Otherwise everything works fine for these extra phones to have in other rooms. I'm not sure why one of the reviewers had so much static but there is no problem whatsoever here. The only time we have had static was in a bad storm but I believe that is normal. We bought them for the inexpensive price to have as extra phones and they do the job. If you want some supplemental phones these will do the job.

I have the same problem as all the other reviewers. At first I thought I was turning on the phone when I was putting it down, and coming back to find it almost dead. After more careful observation, I found out the battery goes from 3 bars (full) to dead within a matter of minutes. I follow all the procedures for recharging NiCd- even letting the battery go completely dead between recharges. The phone is now just under a year old, and I was thinking about getting a new battery, but I don't think so after reading the other reviews. I'm very dissapointed.

I had a set of these in my old house for about 3 years. The were very easy to set-up since only one of them needs to be plugged into a phone jack.

When we moved into a bigger house, I needed more phones so I just bought another set of these, plugged them in wherever I need them, and now I have seven interchangeable handsets all over the house. I didn't need to worry about phone jacks being in the right places, and I don't need to worry about putting the right handset in the right base because they're all interchangeable. Easy, and durable.

I researched all the phones out there for over 2 weeks and finally settled on another Vtech phone. I accidentally threw away a handset from my prior Vtech and so had to replace the whole unit since it was several years old. Almost impossible to find one with a backlit keypad which was a must for me. This system has far more features than I will ever use. It was easy for me to set up what I needed, most of it without referring to the manual and I am technically challenged. The sound is clear and the extra features on the answering unit, like a keypad and number of messages received is a plus compared to some of the other phones out there. My only regret is that it does not take regular rechargeable batteries that my other Vtech used but since I keep my extensions on their chargers, I expect I will not have to replace them for a long time. Very satisfied with this purchase!

this is my fist time purchasing a factory refurbished product. i have to say that i am very pleased. the phone arrived not in the original box, but instead, in a generic manufacturers box and was poorly packed. i was glad to see that everything was there, including the owners manual. i was disappointed to learn of the 90 day warranty and not the original 1 year warranty that is typical with a new product. maybe that's why the refurbished product was half the originals price. i was a bit concerned, when i placed my order, due to the reviews i read on this phone. i'm not sure what the other reviews are talking about. the volume and voice quality on this phone are very good. this is my fourth Panasonic phone in 10 years (2 for my own personal use and 2 as gifts). Panasonic makes a fine product and i have never been disappointed. this factory refurbished phone performed just as well as a new one, but at half the price.

My favorite cordless phone is the Uniden. It was offline for a week while I located a batteries to replace the old ones. In the mean time, I plugged in two different models of these Panasonic phones. This particular model, the KX-TG5422 heated up the battery in both handsets to a level in which it was nearly too hot to touch barehanded. I promptly threw them away. The other Panasonic model...similar, but not same model, seemed to be fine. I may have gotten a bad battery or system (gifted to me). Regardless, I won't be purchasing any Panasonic phones in the future. As I said, I really like the Uniden phones. They fit well in the hand, function properly, last many years and were inexpensive. All reasons why I prefer the Uniden. I just thought it was important to let everyone know that battery malfunction can be dangerous and did occur on this particular model.

Phone is great, no problems, but I bought it to replace the wall mounted cordless in the kitchen. Unfortunately, the phone sticks out a lot when wall mounted and everytime someone walked by they bumped into it.

So now the phone is in the den, on the table and works fine.

I'm still looking for a new wall mounted phone though.

5.8GHz is a *requirement* if you use WiFi (802.11a/b/g) in your house or if you have other wireless technologies that typically get garbled when the 900MHz or 2.4GHz phones are used. I have had absolutely NO reception troubles in my 3300 sqft house and the clarity is superb.

The phone's looks are top-notch. Black and silver is a very slick look for a modern household. Might look a little funny if you're style is country or traditional.

Caller ID works well and the 2-line display is very helpful. Voicemail indicator is also nice.

The biggest surprise feature for me was the speakerphone in the handset! I've used this several times (it's great when you're on hold somewhere or when you need several people to talk at once) and love it!

I was happy with the menu navigation, although I thought they could have offered more features (like... perhaps the ability to control the volume of that LOUD, annoying beeping every time you press a button). The menu seemed sparse to me.

My biggest two gripes with this phone are not petty and not trivial at all. They are showstoppers, in my opinion.

(1) The phone will NOT work well in states that require 10-digit dialing and a +1 in order to dial in-state. In Michigan, for example, I have to dial 1-248-555-1212 to call my neighbor (ok, so that's information, I digress).

Putting My Neighbor in the phone book as 248-555-1212 results in:
- The inbound works fine (caller ID shows up, custom rings sound if set)
- BUT you cannot dial using the phone book or caller ID redial. This is because both will try to dial 248-555-1212, which will not work! Our phone system requires 1-248-555-1212 to be dialed. There is NO setting for this on the phone.

If you think you can be sneaky (like I did) and set the phone book entry to be 1-248-555-1212, then:
- You can call with the phone book, BUT
- Inbound services don't work (no custom rings) and you STILL can't redial them from the caller ID.

In effect, if you live in a state that has converted to full 10-digit dialing and a 1 is required to dial 10 digits, don't bother with this phone. It's slick, but it's unforgiveable that the engineers missed that one considering the first phone I bought myself in 1985 had this capability. Yay, progress!

The new 5.8 gigahertz band has only been available for phone use very recently. The higher band means less interference from many household appliances and even other phones using the same band.

I bought this as a replacement phone for another brand of phone that died. I am very pleased with the sound and distance quality. Supposedly, you can be up to a mile away and still connect, but I have not tested this. I have been able to be in my backyard (my phone base is in a room at the front of the house) at a distance of over 50 feet (I know how far my garden hose will reach) without degredation of quality.

Not only does the base allow near full-duplexing quality speaker phone, the handset is also capable as a stand-alone speaker phone.

The new band means a shorter antenna length is needed, so the antenna is almost invisible.

There is an audio phono jack on the side to accommodate a 1/8" handsfree head/ear set, but such a device is sold separately.

My biggest gripe with this phone is the ridiculously short belt clip. It is literally only 1" long, which means all you have to do is bend over and the phone drops. If they provided at least a 2" long clip or one w/ a spring that would grab a belt or fabric, that would have been preferable.

Another gripe is the so-called "custom ring" feature. I enable the custom ring, but the regular ring is still just as loud, but rings in tandem with a little tune - quite annoying.

Also annoying is the 4-clicks to delete a record from the caller ID. The phone is feature-packed with menu buttons, but not too intuitive - you really need to read the manual thoroughly to know what does what.

The mute button on the base is great, and there is one on the handset as well.

You can save number in a "rocket dial" directory for speedy dialing.

The talk button is also the flash button, so there is a separate button labeled "end" for terminating a connection.

The unit will support one additional handset in tandem w/ one in the base station which is a nice feature that not all phones have. I'm saving up to get the additional handset so I can have one in my kitchen.

There is a light in the handset that is supposed to illuminate when you have new voice mail, but my light has never come on, even when I have voicemail waiting for me... also a bummer that gives this phone a less than perfect rating. All in all, though, I must say this is one of the best portable phones I have ever used.

I have had this phone for over six months and I think it is just terrific. The handsets with built-in speakerphones work great, although I have not used them often as I tend to think speakerphones are rude. In fact, I have been so happy that I purchased additional handsets and placed them all over the house. I have also purchased several sets as gifts and everyone that has received them have appreciated their clarity and ease of use.

While I understand a few others have been disappointed, my experience has been quite the opposite. I simply think this phone is simply great!

I bought this phone strictly because of the Uniden reputation. It was to replace my 6 year old Panasonic which was missing its antenna and still worked somewhat decent.

Within a 30 foot radius of the base the Uniden sounded excellent and it's features such as distinct ring and phone book were very impressive. But as soon as I walked beyond 30 feet the phone would completely cut out and I would have to run back to let the caller know I didn't hang up. I was shocked and disappointed that this happened to a 5.8 gigahertz Uniden and attempted to solve the problem by reading the instructions fully and relocating the base but nothing worked. (Yes I scanned all the channels manually and automatically without improvement.)

I decided to return it instead of an exchange because I felt with such clarity within 30 feet and such poor performance beyond that, that it was not a lemon but just a poorly made phone. Another reason I believed it to be a quality problem is because I had a similar experience with Panasonic. Their older phones worked spectacular but the new models are garbage too. I don't know if this is a sign that companies feel they can produce cheaper quality products and sell them due to their past reputation and get away with it or just a strange coincidence. For now it's back to the Panasonic without an antenna.

This was my experience, hopefully yours is different.

This phone would be great if it did not have the worst static come and go several times throughout a call. It never fails, when I need to make a really important call-- the static is so loud I can't hear at all. Every time we use it the static interrupts our conversation because we can't hear. And Target wouldn't take it back without the box--How long are we supposed to keep the box- reasonably!!

When my sons cordless died he went an bought this phone system for himself so that he could keep one in his room and another in his office (located in separate areas of the home). after he let it charge overnight we tested it out and were ammazed with it it could work inside outside all the way to the mailbox with no/little static!!! It was/is amazing. We contacted VTech they offer a very similar model for people with multilines/mailboxes and has the capability to add 7 hand sets--which is great since we all have seperated lines and sep. mailboxes.

We have had a lot of phones.....seems like if they aren't vtech they go out or quit working rather frequently. This 2 phone system is great. Three mailboxes means I don't have to listen through the messages for my 18 yo to get to mine, I just set her up her own mailbox. If you don't set up separate mailboxes when one gets full it will move on to the 2nd or the 3rd one so that you don't miss any messages. I love the intercom feature too. It has saved me soooo much walking in my 3 level townhome. I can just hit the intercom button and ask my daughter a question instead of having to walk up 2 flights of stairs to her room if I'm on the lowest level. The speakerphone feature is great too when you are on hold or navigating through those elaborate annoying automated systems everyone seems to have anymore. I've had this system since august of 2004 and so far I have had no problems whatsoever with it. I would highly recommed it!

The phones didn't even last a year-the batteries started losing their charge/not charging. And even if they did manage to charge, they did not have a very long use time/talk time. We thought about replacing the batteries, however it was cheaper in the long run to get new phones-this time we went with Uniden and have been happy with them.

The phone works ok (good reception, etc.), but my battery died after less than a year. I tried their website for a replacement, but the wrong type is shown for this particular model. So, I tried phoning customer support... BIG mistake.

The company uses a really difficult voice-mail system. Like everyone, I've experienced a few of these in my day, but this is THE WORST - trust me. To make a long story short, I was able to purchase a battery replacement after about 45 minutes of pressing buttons (and waiting on hold).

When I tried to contact a supervisor to vent my frustration (nicely), I was put on hold for 30 minutes. After hanging up and phoning back (their main corporate headquarters) I discovered that it's absolutely impossible to speak to anyone in person - you have to leave a message and wait for a call-back the following day.

Hard to believe a corporation of their size won't pay for an operator to be there for a customer as a last resort... I realize that in this day and age every company needs to cut costs to remain competitive. But, this should never come at the expense of the customer needing support - there's no better way to lose loyalty than to frustrate someone who is already experiencing difficulty. If I had to do it over again, I'd think twice before buying one of their products. I give them 3+ stars for the phone, but a big zero for customer support.

Lots of problems. The worst cordless phone I have ever owned. Probably the worst phone I have ever owned. Possibly the worst household appliance I have ever owned. Bad design, implementation, construction, and support.

I kept my Vtech ip5825 despite the problems lots of folks have reported with battery recharging and 2.4 interference. I want to let people know about all the OTHER problems this terrible phone has. Only one of my two handsets had recharging problems. It was also the handset that was physically hot to the touch when recharging.

1) The hot recharging problem is actually noted on the Vtech WebSite FAQs, but with no information as to what to do about it. This is inexcusable. The problem is so common that it is on a FAQ! If the solution is to send it in for a replacement, Vtech should say so. Bad Web support.

2) The belt clip is nice, but Heaven help you if it breaks. Vtech does not sell a replacement, at any price. If you need the belt clip, you can end up with a useless phone for the lack of what should be a 50 cent piece of plastic. Bad sales support.

3) The volume control buttons are prominent and on the side. Very easy to adjust, particularly by accident when you are grabbing the phone. Bad design.

4) The menu system is very clumsy. There are no menu shortcuts. It took a sequence of seven button pushes, watching the screen as I scrolled, in order to mute the ringer when I went to sleep.

5) Muting the ringer also mutes the locator. If the ringer is off, you can lose the handset and the locator won't help you find it. Horribly bad implementation.

6) When dropped, the battery cover often pops off. Poor construction.

7) The phone book only holds 50 numbers, which is a lot less than it sounds like.

8) Editing the phone book is not intuitive. I had to recheck the manual every time for the first few months. Adding numbers from the re-dial list was confusing even *with* the manual.

9) Editing telephone numbers is nearly impossible. If you need to add a "one" in front of a phone number to dial long-distance, you have to delete the entire number and then re-type it!

10) After a year or so, the phone developed so much static that it became unusable. Other folks could hear me, but I couldn't hear them at all. That's when I gave up.

This many different types of problems in just one product strongly suggests that Vtech is a terribly managed company. I will not buy Vtech again and I am recommending to my friends and family that they don't either.

The phones worked just fine, very easy to use, no interferences with our wi-fi. We bought them less than two years ago, and around two months ago both phones needed a new battery, first the one we use the most and then about three or four days later, the other one, which we don't use much. After replacing the batteries, the display started to fail, one line at a time. Now it's to the point where one of the phone's display is completely unreadable, and the other one is only somewhat readable in the first line. We were pretty happy with them, and we have given them good use, but it just seems like they are somehow programmed to last a couple of years.

Setup was easy and we have had no problems with the phones as of this writing. We also have an older model Uniden that we've had for about three years with no problems.
